Maximizing Vertical Space Without Compromising Safety: A Guide to Industrial Stairways and Elevated Work Areas

Vertical leap is prized in the Olympic high jump and when dunking a basketball, but the athletes need a running start to reach those heights.

Maintenance and production staff in modern industrial plants also must reach elevated work areas; however, these facilities do not have the luxury of wide open spaces for them to get off the mark. The pressure for manufacturing floor optimization leads to extensive—and creative—use of factory and warehouse vertical space.

OSHA 1910.25(b)(6) says that each stair must support at least five times the normal anticipated live load, but never less than a concentrated load of 1,000 pounds applied at any point.

OSHA 1926.1052(c)(3)(i) and (c)(4) require handrail heights of at least 36 inches and midrails halfway between the top rail and steps.

For example, OSHA standards for guardrails on walking-working surfaces require a top rail height of 42 inches (+/- 3 inches) and that the top rail be able to withstand a force of 200 pounds (890 N) applied in a downward or outward direction within 2 inches of the top edge, at any point along the top rail (OSHA 1910.29(b)(1) and (3)).

Industrial mezzanine systems increase storage or work access space significantly and can be installed within an existing facility. Featuring a modular design, they can be customized to fit specific floor space and storage requirements. They can also be reconfigured if the needs or layout of the facility change.

To ensure safety:

  • Platforms must be engineered to handle the expected load and storage weight.
  • Perimeter guardrails with appropriate handrails and toe boards are critical along all exposed edges.
  • Access points should be secured with self-closing safety gates.

Spring-loaded swing gates close automatically when a worker passes through, ensuring that openings at the top of stairways or ladders are never accidentally left unguarded.
